Over the past few years, Meliá Hotels International has steadily expanded its footprint in the Middle East, culminating in a landmark decision to enter the Bahraini market. The announcement of the group’s first property in Bahrain marked a strategic step into one of the Gulf’s most promising tourism destinations.
The Arrival on Amwaj Island
The new Meliá Hotels & Resorts property, located on the upscale Amwaj Island, is scheduled to open in 2027. Positioned just 15 minutes from Bahrain International Airport, the hotel represents a perfect blend of accessibility and exclusivity. The development includes 256 units, comprising 150 hotel rooms and 106 branded residences, showcasing Meliá’s growing commitment to combining luxury hospitality with high-end residential offerings.
A Luxury Experience Designed for Today’s Traveler
From its inception, the project was envisioned as a full-service luxury destination. Guests can expect five swimming pools, multiple dining venues, landscaped gardens, retail spaces, and sophisticated meeting and event facilities. A standout feature is the Beso Beach Club, offering Mediterranean cuisine, private cabanas, and exclusive member areas—a clear nod to Meliá’s focus on lifestyle experiences and wellness.
Bahrain’s Rising Tourism Profile
At the time of Meliá’s announcement, Bahrain had already seen over 10 million visitors in 2023, a number projected to exceed 14 million by 2026 thanks to government investments in modern infrastructure and tourism diversification initiatives. The island’s combination of privacy, sea views, private beaches, and premium amenities made it an ideal choice for Meliá’s first Bahraini property.
Strategic Vision and Long-Term Goals
Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Meliá Hotels International, highlighted the strategic importance of Bahrain: “This market represents a unique opportunity to strengthen our presence in the Middle East. With its growing influence and high-value destination developments, Bahrain aligns perfectly with our long-term vision and commitment to offering exclusive experiences.”
Looking Ahead
Meliá’s entry into Bahrain is more than just a hotel opening—it reflects the group’s broader strategy to grow in key Gulf markets, combining luxury hospitality with residential offerings to meet evolving traveler expectations. This milestone in Bahrain underscores the company’s role in shaping the region’s tourism landscape, providing a model for future expansions in high-potential destinations.
